Educational Objectives

The Foreclosure Defense Internship allows students to work on foreclosure cases being handled by the Foreclosure Defense Project at Iowa Legal Aid. The internship allows students to learn various aspects of Iowa real estate, consumer and foreclosure law, and mortgage law while assisting the legal services attorneys who represent borrowers in foreclosure. In this internship the students and supervisors know what the internship is meant to accomplish and how students are expected to learn in several ways. First, the supervising professor keeps in frequent contact with students and supervisors during the course of the internship. Supervisors understand that students need to have meaningful and varied work. Second, students are invited to discuss their work with the supervising professor during the semester so that issues are addressed early. Third, at the end of the internship both students and supervisors are required to answer a questionnaire that seeks information about the value of the internship to the intern’s learning, and the value of the intern to the organization supervising the internship.
