CONFERENCE ON INNOVATION AND COMMUNICATIONS LAW

University of Turku, Finland
July 17-18, 2008

Conference Description

The conditions for innovation and communications are changing rapidly. Distributed modes of creation and innovation are flourishing and challenging traditional modes of centrally-planned innovation within established institutions. Two examples of mode-shifting with Finnish roots are the open source development of Linux and the innovation model of Nokia, the global leader in mobile communications.

Meanwhile, the Internet has also enabled changes in the communications field. Everyone with an Internet connection can now participate in the creation of meaning and interact as a member of the public. Indeed, much of the recent developments takes place on Internet-based platforms, which naturally also serve as a buzzing global marketplace.

Because intellectual property laws are designed to solve real-world problems, solutions that are traditionally territorial often fit poorly in a global and virtual world. This conference therefore seeks to explore the role of law in developing solutions to problems that arise when traditional laws encounter changing technology or new behavior from industry and private citizens.

The conference is jointly organized by the University of Turku Faculty of Law, University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, Michigan State University College of Law, the IPR University Center in Finland, and the Intellectual Property Law Center at Drake University Law School.
