Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and Inclusion
Drake Law School’s long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion is expressed in a variety of ways. In addition to providing diversity scholarships and sponsoring special events, the Law School houses archives of the National Bar Association (NBA).  The National Bar Association was co-founded by alumnus Charles Preston Howard, LW’20, after African Americans were excluded from membership in the American Bar Association.

Des Moines has a rich history of inclusiveness. Vocativ (the global media organization for the Digital Generation) has recently ranked Des Moines 4th on their list of "America's Most LGBT-Friendly Cities" (coming in after Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco) and earns high scores on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index.

Scholarship Opportunities

For over 30 years, Drake Law has made a major scholarship commitment to achieve a diverse student body. With a scholarship budget of nearly $4 million, a majority of law students receive financial aid. Through its Opportunity Scholarship awards, Drake Law School seeks a student population of many different experiences, opinions, backgrounds and cultures. In choosing the scholarship recipients, the Law School weighs many factors, including, but not limited to, race and national origin. The awards for these scholarships range from one-quarter to full-tuition and are renewable for recipients who are enrolled full-time.

Diversity Initiatives

In an effort to further facilitate learning, diversity, inclusion and understanding, the Law School’s Diversity Committee, comprised of student leaders, faculty and staff, sponsors events throughout the semester. The committee previously hosted a diversity orientation reception and the Diversity Career Forum, which provided an opportunity for students and local attorneys to network and discuss the importance of a diverse legal profession.

In 2011, Drake Law School served as one of two host institutions for the Council on Legal Education Opportunity Scholars (CLEO) Six Week Pre-Law Summer Institute, a program that provides the opportunity for diverse and economically disadvantaged students to prepare for law school. The law school was presented with a Diversity Award from the CLEO Program in 2012. Additionally, Drake Law was inducted into CLEO’s inaugural group of William A. Blakey Diversity Pipeline Architects in 2013.  Drake Law, in partnership with the Law School Admission Council’s DiscoverLaw.org Months, also hosts semi-annual pipeline program events for racially and ethnically diverse high school students interested in the legal profession.

Cultural Events

Des Moines, a city of over a half a million residents, was named the #1 City for Business and Careers by Forbes in August 2013.  The city also provides ample opportunities for cultural exploration and learning as well. Events such as I’ll Make Me a World in Iowa, CelebrAsian, and the Latino Heritage Festival, are hosted annually.

Student Organizations

Student Organizations
Drake Law's numerous student organizatons provide leadership opportunities for students in addition to supporting the social needs of its members.  Membership in these diverse student organizations is open to all interested students.  Please visit our Student Organization webpage for more information.
