Hi there! My name is Funmi Akinmulero and I am originally from London, England
. My new home includes pretty much all of Southern California, where I finished high school and attended college. I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science with a minor in Social Psychology from San Diego State University.
I have always been fascinated by the way the law in this country affects the lives of people on a daily – if not hourly – basis. As an immigrant, I have personally experienced both the positive and negative processes by which the law can take power over a person’s life. In an effort to be part of a force, which strives to see the law affect positive change in the lives of others
, law school was the only way to go!
I chose to attend Drake after I participated in CLEO, a 6-week summer law school preparation program that Drake hosted immediately prior to my 1L year. After getting to know many of the faculty, staff and students-complimented with the accommodating and supportive environment
they fostered-the choice as to where to attend law school was not a difficult one to make.
My first memorable experience occurred during my 1L year in which Drake provided me an opportunity to do some pro-bono work in New Orleans
over spring break. How many 1L’s can say they worked on double-succession affidavits just a semester into law school? Thanks to Drake I was able to do just that (and much more).
After a studious first year at Drake, I spent the summer as a judicial clerk at the Los Angeles Superior Court
. The experience was remarkable. I can honestly say that the consistent support and guidance I received from the career center enabled my application materials for that position to be strong.
As a 2L, my academic schedule is nicely balanced with the following activities; at-large member of the Student Bar Association and a member of the Public Relations Committee, social chair of the Black Law Students Association, secretary of the Intellectual Property Law Society and (my favorite) a member of the Intellectual Property Moot Court team. I am really appreciative of the fact that Drake allows students a diverse array of opportunities
in which they can match-up their academic interests with their personal ones.
Law school is difficult. Therefore, it is such a relief to know that when life throws all those unexpected things at me, I’ll have a supportive group of faculty, staff and students always there to help. I look forward to meeting you when you begin your journey at Drake Law.
