Hello! My name is Abigail Thiel, and I am a student here at Drake University Law School. I was born and raised in Ames, Iowa until the age of 13, when I went to train at the Indiana/World Skating Academy in Indianapolis, IN. I trained as a competitive figure skater
there and competed on the national and international stage until I chose to retire in 2008 and pursue my undergraduate education at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN where I earned my Bachelors of Science in Neuroscience
Choosing to pursue a legal education was a pursuit I had given a great deal of thought to. Growing up, I watched my father prepare for cases as an expert witness and found myself fascinated with the process. I still was not entirely sure a legal career was for me until I visited Drake Law School. Sitting in on Professor Rosenbloom’s property class and Professor Strassberg’s contracts class gave me such insight as to what my day to day would be like at Drake. The professors were engaged
in the student’s thoughts and encouraged them to form their own opinions and gave credence and respect to everyone’s ideas
. Most of all, the students at Drake all seemed happy and were smiling
—which was a great departure from some of the other schools I had visited where coffee and Advil seemed to be in greater abundance than the smiles. I knew I wanted to come back home to Iowa and pursue my law degree at a top rate institution…Drake Law.
After coming to Drake, I have not even had the chance to doubt my decision. Between classes, oral argument competitions, job interviews, networking events, guest speakers and sitting in on a real trial, Drake has provided me with so many opportunities to not only learn, but to engage and to apply all that I am learning
. The frosting on top is I have met some of my best friends here. Friends that I know will not only stay up late finishing tort reading with me, but will be some of the most capable and competent attorneys and colleagues thanks to their legal education at Drake University Law School as well.
Choosing to go to law school was difficult; choosing to go to Drake was easy
. I hope that you will take a look at Drake too!
