Hey! My name is Libby Vickers, and I’m a student at Drake Law. While many of my classmates are from out-of-state, I’ve lived here in Iowa all my life. I grew up in Greene, a small town in the northeast part of the state, and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Ethics and Public Policy.
I didn’t always know that I wanted to go to law school. During college I worked in a treatment center for children with psychiatric and behavioral disorders, and planned to pursue a career in social work. But many of the kids and families I worked with were also dealing with a wide variety of legal issues. I decided to go to law school and pursue a career in public service
after seeing the difference that a good attorney could make in the lives of these children and their families who were already facing such great challenges.
Drake Law was an easy choice for me. It is an amazing school with a strong commitment to Public Service. The professors, faculty, and administrators truly put their students first
. But Drake Law is also a great community. While that’s not an easy thing to describe on a website, it’s something I noticed the first time I toured the campus and had a chance to talk with current students.
After my 1L year, I interned with the General Counsel for ChildServe
, a local non-profit organization. This was a great opportunity that was made available through Drake’s Career Development Office. I also worked at Iowa Legal Aid
, advising elderly Iowans on legal issues ranging from landlord-tenant disputes to estate planning. Drake has an amazing summer intern partnership with Iowa Legal Aid that places several students with Legal Aid offices across the state. This program offers a unique hands-on experience for students, and is a great example of Drake’s commitment to public service!
Law school is challenging, demanding, and a lot of hard work. But the great thing about Drake Law is that you won’t be going through it alone. The students here are friendly and truly supportive of one another. In particular, the people I’ve met through my involvement with Delta Theta Phi (our law school fraternity) have made the sometimes difficult law school experience so much better. I love Drake Law
, and I hope you’ll get a chance to visit campus soon so that you can see for yourself what makes this place so special!
