Co-curricular Activities

The Drake Intellectual Property Law Center develops an active co-curriculum to enhance students’ classroom experience. The Intellectual Property Law Society is one of the many longstanding student organizations at the law school. Founded in 1993, the organization seeks to further the understanding and career opportunities of students interested in pursuing careers in intellectual property law. The Drake Entertainment and Sports Law Society also provides law students with a forum to explore the field of entertainment and sports law. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in regional and national trial and moot court competitions to hone their analytical and advocacy skills. Students also can participate in events and projects sponsored by the nationally recognized Agricultural Law Center.

Interdisciplinary Studies

The Drake Intellectual Property Law Center emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and fosters close collaborative relationships with other departments at Drake University, Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. Qualified students enrolled in the Drake College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences may complete both the pharmacy and J.D. degrees in eight years. The law school also offers joint-degree programs, such as J.D./M.B.A., J.D./M.H.A., J.D./M.P.A., J.D./M.P.H. and J.D./M.S. in Agricultural Economics, with other departments within the University and with Des Moines University, Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. These programs enable students to complete law school with substantial savings in time and money.

Global Education

The Drake Intellectual Property Law Center recognizes the need for students to develop a sophisticated understanding of the global business environment. The Center actively provides students with advice and assistance concerning study-abroad programs and internships in foreign countries.

In addition to events on international intellectual property law and developments in China and the Asia Pacific region, the law school offers the Summer in France Program at the University of Nantes every year. Recent summer courses that are relevant to students with intellectual property-related interests include Art, Cultural Heritage, and the Law; Change and Development in European Legal Systems; European Union Law and Transnational Civil Litigation.

In spring 2009, the law school also instituted a new International Law Fellowship Program for students interested in studying for a semester at Southwest University of Political Science and Law in Chongqing, China.
