Drake Law’s Director of Center for Children’s Rights to Serve on Panel

Drake Law School’s Brent Pattison, assistant clinical professor of law and director of The Joan and Lyle Middleton Center for Children's Rights, will serve on a panel titled, “Bullying: Educators’ Legal Responsibilities” on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 7-9 p.m. The forum will be held in the Reading Room, Cowles Library on Drake’s campus.

With growing public awareness of bullying being further broadened by recent films like "Bully" and "Finding Kind," the issue of bullying is front and center in Iowa. In light of anti-bullying laws and new reporting requirements, what are teachers’ and administrators’ responsibilities in situations of bullying and harassment, and what resources and support are available? Drake University is gathering a multi-disciplinary panel of experts to explore the answers.

The event is co-sponsored by Drake’s School of Education and Drake Law School’s Joan and Lyle Middleton Center for Children’s Rights. Panelists include Jason Glass, director of the Iowa Department of Education, Mary Gannon, attorney for the Iowa Association of School Boards, Sue Schirmer, license renewal coordinator for Heartland Area Education Agency and adjunct professor for Drake’s School of Education, and Pattison. There is no charge to attend but seating is limited.
