Dean Lovell's Civil Rights Work Featured in NAACP Award

On January 25 the I'll Make Me a World in Iowa Festival awarded the Iowa-Nebraska State Conference of the NAACP its 2008 Heritage Legacy Award for Leading Organization. This year's celebration was the 10-year anniversary of Iowa's African-American Festival, and the award presentation was made at its Grand Gala Reception at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines.

A video presentation of the NAACP's civil rights work and contributions prominently featured the efforts of Drake law professor Russell Lovell that span the 34 years he has served on the NAACP Legal Redress Committee. Professor Lovell (far right) served as lead counsel on NAACP cases that desegregated the Des Moines Fire Department and the Indiana State Police Department and, most recently, authored the 2007 NAACP report that was critical of Iowa state government hiring practices and procedures.
