To join your Windows XP-based laptop to the University's wireless network, follow these instructions. Example images were created on a laptop using the default "Windows XP" theme, not "Classic". Some screens may appear different on various systems. If you encounter any troubles during this process, please contact Drake Technology Services.


  1. Locate and right-click on your wireless network connection icon in your computer's system tray (lower-right portion of your screen).

  2. Click View Available Wireless Networks.

  3. A dialog appears prompting you to Choose a wireless network. Click "Change advanced settings" on the left side.

  1. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window that appears, click the Wireless Networks tab and be sure "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" is selected.

  2. Click the Advanced button near the bottom-right. In the dialog that follows, make sure "Access point (infrastructure) networks only" is selected.

  3. Deselect the checkbox labeled "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks" then click Close.

  4. Under Preferred Networks, click Add…
  1. Enter DUStudent as the "Network name (SSID)."

  2. Select WPA from the Network Authentication pull-down menu and TKIP from Data Encryption.

  3. Verify that "This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network…" is not selected.

  1. Click the Authentication tab near the dialog's top and choose Protected EAP (PEAP) as the EAP type.

  2. Deselect the options "Authenticate as computer when computer information is available" and "Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable".

  3. Click the Properties button next to the EAP type pull-down menu…

  1. In the window that appears, ensure that the option to "Validate server certificate" is selected.

  2. Under Trusted Root Certification Authorities, scroll down and select "UTN-USERFirst-Hardware".

  3. Under Select Authentication Method, choose "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)" then click Configure…

  4. In the dialog that appears, deselect the option to "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)".


  1. Click OK three times to close the "EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties", "Protected EAP Properties", and "Wireless network properties" dialogs.

  2. DUStudent should now appear within your Preferred Networks of the remaining "Wireless Network Connection Properties" window.  Click OK to close the current dialog.

  3. In a matter of moments, a popup message will appear indicating "Wireless Network Connection: Click here to select a certificate or other credentials for connection to the network DUStudent." Click on the message.

  1. In the dialog that appears, enter your 9-digit Drake ID in the User name field, followed by your campus password in the Password field. Enter DRAKE in the Logon Domain field and click OK.


    Your computer should now be connected to the campus-wide wireless network! Open a web browser to test your connection. If this is your first time connecting, you should be directed to a network registration page. If you don't see this within 5 seconds, visit "http://netdns2.drake.edu/".

    Follow the on-screen instructions. You will be asked to submit your username (9-digit Drake ID) and campus password. Restart your computer when prompted.
